Few surfaces are completely ideal for bonding, Priming is a means of transforming a surface, chemically , physically, or both to give long and short term performance.

The simplest form of priming is wiping the prepared surface with conditioner which reacts with the surface to give improved 'wetting' characteristics and more reactive sites. Porous and rough surfaces require a primer with more 'body' in it which will re-profile the surface to give a dense, even bond-line.

The primer also prevents carriers or resins present in wet adhesive being absorbed into the substrate which can cause premature drying or bond-line starvation.

Primers must always be allowed to dry thoroughly before applying Sikaflex®.

Primed surfaces must be protected from contamination by dust, vapours, moisture etc. until the bond is formed.

Tests with actual substrates and conditions must be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.
